Construction management firm chosen for Westside project

(SPS) -- During November's regular Board of Education meeting, board members approved Sapulpa-based D.C. Bass & Sons Construction Company as the construction management firm for the Westside Sports Complex project. The project is part of Chieftain Stronger Bond 2023, which was passed by voters in September.

Demolition work should begin on the site within the next 24 to 48 hours. The site, formerly the Sapulpa Youth Baseball Association's practice fields, will be demolished by K&T Trucking & Site Clearing Inc., to make way for Sapulpa Public Schools' brand new baseball and softball fields. The baseball and softball fields will both be equipped with artificial turf. The complex will also include an indoor practice facility, concession stand, locker rooms, restrooms, office space, and bleachers.

Seven construction management firms entered proposals for the project. Assistant Superintendent Johnny Bilby and district Chief Financial Officer Kenda Terrones interviewed four firms as finalists, before selecting D.C. Bass & Sons, which then required approval by the school board.

Since 1983, D.C. Bass has served Sapulpa and the seven state area of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Kansas, Texas, Colorado and New Mexico. The company recently completed a new building for Bristow Public Schools as well as Riverfield Country Day School.

Work is expected to move quickly at Westside, with teams likely able to utilize the new facilities by spring of 2025.

"A new baseball facility will be a game changer for our back-to-back Regional Championship winning baseball program. A turf field will allow us to keep up with other top area baseball programs and avoid countless hours of field and facility maintenance where we can focus solely on bringing a State Championship product to the field," said SPS Head Baseball Coach Steven Irvine.

The Westside baseball-softball project was part of Proposition 1 of Chieftain Stronger Bond 2023. The resolution calls for $23 million to be used toward the Westside Athletic Complex as well as new football locker rooms and office space at Collins Stadium.
