Sapulpa Chieftains football headed to playoffs

(SPS) -- Update 11/10/2023 -- Sapulpa lost to the Claremore Zebras, 48-47, in an upset in the first round of playoffs. Thank you to the Sapulpa community for the continued support of the Chieftain football team! Winter sports seasons, including basketball and wrestling, have officially begun. The home basketball opener is Tuesday, December 12 at Chieftain Center. The varsity girls tip off at 6:30 p.m., followed by the boys at 8 p.m.

(SPS) -- The Chieftains are headed to the OSSAA playoffs this week where they will face the Claremore Zebras in the first round. They kick off Friday, November 10, at 7:00 p.m. at Claremore.

The Chieftains, led by head coach Tim Holt, Jr., in his third season at Sapulpa, are going into this playoff game with a 7-3 record, compared to Claremore's 9-1. Although, arguably, Sapulpa has faced tougher opponents throughout the season. Sapulpa is ranked third in District 5A-3 to Claremore's second place ranking in 5A-4.

Sapulpa QB Colton Howard has passed for 1,968 yards and 25 touchdowns, reports Barry Lewis of the Tulsa World. Other notable players include senior Kylen Edwards who has run in 11 touchdowns this season and Marco Smith who has made 21 touchdowns.

The Chieftains have gone to playoffs the last seven seasons but have not advanced past quarterfinals, reports Lewis.

Stadium gates open at 6:00 p.m. on Friday; admission is $10. Sapulpa Marching Band will pay at halftime. Claremore has a clear bag policy which is the same as that at Collins Stadium. Review the security policies here.
