Students participate in a past Road to the Revolution event(SPS) -- Fifth-grade students within Sapulpa Public Schools went back in time on March 3.

Way back in time.

They participated in the district’s Road to the Revolution: Colonial Times 2.0. The students transformed into colonists for the first annual event that brought history alive.

“We want them to fully immerse themselves in what life was like for a colonist in the 1700s,” said Megan Cannon of Sapulpa Public Schools.

The event was held at First Baptist Church in Sapulpa and included interactions with Benjamin Franklin, Dr. Craik (George Washington’s doctor and friend), James Armistead Lafayette (Continental Army soldier), and Caroline Branham (Martha Washington’s personal housemaid). Most everyone who participated was dressed in colonial attire, including the students.

The students also experienced colonial games and dancing.

“It’s so important that they understand where we come from and what people did so that we can have our freedom today,” said Cannon.

The Sons of the American Revolution presented colors and the Daughters of the American Revolution - who generously donated $350 - were also on hand to greet and guide students throughout the day.

Approximately 400 students attended the event.

Sapulpa 5th-graders have attended similar events in the past but this is the first time the district has coordinated its own.

"It's the coolest thing to see."

The event was originally scheduled for Feb. 6 but due to inclement weather that day, schools were closed.
