(SPS) -- Despite the August heat, hundreds of Chieftain fans celebrated the inaugural Chieftain Community Kickoff Thursday night at Collins Stadium.

The event, designed to be an evening of school and community spirit, was organized by Sapulpa High School and Student Council. It was the perfect opportunity to rally fans for the football season opener.

Attendees enjoyed food trucks, games, raffle drawings, and inflatables set up in the stadium parking lot. Kids tried to hold eight seconds on a mechanical bull. Students also took aim at Sapulpa High School Principal Seth Shibley and Athletic Director Michael Rose, sinking them in a dunk tank.

The football team, cheerleaders and others swung a sledgehammer, taking down a clunker in a car bash as if it was their opponent on the field. Proceeds benefit Chieftain athletics and activities.

Inside the stadium, each team, from Little Chiefs through Varsity, was introduced and met with excited applause and cheers as they ran through the tunnel.

The Sapulpa High School Big Blue Band played as cheerleaders, Ping Pings and fall athletic teams filled the field, ready to show off their talents for the fall athletic season.

With the fantastic turnout, organizer Deanna Hayes says she expects the new Chieftain Community Kickoff tradition will continue for many years to come!

Sapulpa takes on Sand Springs in the Highway 97 Rivalry Friday night.
