(SPS) -- This week, the Sapulpa High School Marching band will board a bus for Flagstaff, Arizona, where they will compete Saturday in the prestigious Bands of America regional competition.

Marching bands from across the nation will take part. It's a goal SPS band director and 2022-23 Teacher of the Year Whitney Yokum has had for her students since she began at Sapulpa in 2019. Sapulpa is the only Oklahoma band competing in the Flagstaff regional-- and will face bands from high schools in Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, and California.

The Big Blue Band earned 6th place at the Owasso Marching Invitational, beating some of the best bands in the region. Now they'll take their DISCO! performance to the national field, competing against the best high school marching bands from across the United States.

DISCO! is made up of memorable 70s tunes such as "Stayin' Alive" and "Dancing Queen," and incorporates colorful uniforms and energetic color guard choreography. Bands of America begins Saturday, October 7. Sapulpa's preliminary performance takes place at 3:30 p.m. (5:30 p.m. Central) and livestream tickets can be purchased on the Bands of America website.

Good luck, Big Blue!

Because the band will be on the road, they will not be performing at the home football game on Friday, October 6.
