Freaky Friday logo(SPS) — Among the items on the Sapulpa Schools Board of Education agenda Monday evening was the approval of the license agreement for the all-school musical.

With a unanimous vote, high school students will present Freaky Friday the Musical in the spring of 2020.

The musical is based on the 1972 novel by Mary Rodgers and the hit Disney films, the most recent of which starred Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. Mary Rodgers is the daughter of Richard Rodgers of Rodgers and Hammerstein.

“I first heard the soundtrack a couple of years ago and really liked it,” said Vocal Music Director Gina Myers. “I knew it would be a great show for our school to do when the year was right.”

The musical includes two acts, seven main characters, and a large ensemble cast. Those components are what helped Mrs. Myers determine this was the year for Freaky Friday.

“Choosing what musical to do first starts with considering your potential cast. You have to estimate who you will have and what their strengths are and find something that matches up well with that. It's like putting a puzzle together,” she said.

“You also have to consider the staging requirements and how that works with what we have the capability to do. This year we had decided to do something more modern and it seemed like all of the puzzle pieces fit.”

Freaky Friday the Musical is about an overworked mother and her teenage daughter magically swap bodies, they have just one day to put things right again. By spending a day in each other's shoes, Katherine and Ellie come to appreciate one another’s struggles, learn self-acceptance, and realize the immeasurable love and mutual respect that bond a mother and daughter.

Auditions are slated for Dec. 3 and 4 with the first read-through to follow a few days later. Mrs. Myers said the students are excited to get started and she said the community will enjoy the production.

“I'm so thankful that we live in a city that supports the Arts in our schools and that we are so fortunate to have the Bartlett Foundation investing in the education and culture of our community! We could not do this musical without the support of our BOE and the support and financial backing of the Bartlett Foundation. We are immensely grateful!”

There will be three performances for the public on March 5, 6, and 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Shaw Auditorium.
