Students at Senior Sunrise(SPS) - A new tradition at Sapulpa High School may have been borne on the first day of the 2019-2020 school year.

Officers of the Class of 2020 organized Senior Sunrise for students to gather at the football field before school began.

Approximately 50 seniors got up a little early to meet at 6:30 Thursday morning. Once there, they took pictures, played frisbee, and laughed as the sun slowly came up over the stadium.

"This is just like the start of the school year, bringing everybody back together as a class," said senior Shawn Holland.

The morning was just time for the students to hang out though.

"We prayed and talked about goals for the school year," said senior Isaac Smith.

Holland said he had mixed emotions about coming back to school. He was excited to come back but at the same time, he was also dreading it because he knew it was his last year.

"It's just a lot of understanding that it's time to grow up and being okay with growing up," he said.

As the sun came up and the clock ticked closer to the start of class, the seniors came together with a hand-made banner that said Senior Sunrise to take a group photo.

Come May, this group will be back out on the field. They're already planning a Senior Sunset where they'll get together to look back at their senior year and to watch the sun set over Collins Stadium, and their years at Sapulpa.

And just like that, they were off to class.
