Sapulpa Boys Soccer sharing kindness

Boys Soccer thinking of others during COVID-19 outbreak

(SPS) - We’re living through a different time in our lives. One we’ve never experienced before.

People are being asked to essentially stay home during the COVID-19 outbreak across the country, but if you do get out in public, you’re asked to practice social distancing.

Executive orders near and far have mandated restaurants to limit services to drive-thru or take-out. Movie theaters have closed. Woodland Hills Mall has closed. Stores such as Walmart and Target, that typically operate around the clock, have adjusted store hours to limit exposure, thoroughly clean, restock, and provide specific shopping hours for the elderly and persons who are high-risk to infection.

And, of course, schools have closed. So, now what? What can you do when everything has seemingly come to a halt?

For the boys of the Sapulpa Chieftains Soccer program, it’s a time to serve others. Head coach Kip Shubert will deliver a care basket containing 75 thank you cards and items for the nursing home staff at Ranch Terrace in Sapulpa. Those who donated did so via a drive-through process at the Westside Sports Complex so that proper social distancing was followed.

“The boys were happy to be able to just drive up to a place that has become a second home, family for them, and I think it helped them shift the focus off of what they are missing out on and onto what is really important,” said coach Shubert. “And that is being of service to others.”

Coach Shubert said he wanted the boys to have an outlet that allowed them to shift their mindset from the reality of the season possibly being over and onto helping others.

“That is why we train as champions, so that we can make an impact beyond the field and into real life. I thought it was a great opportunity to use this time of adversity to allow the boys to live out the culture we have instilled in them as a team.”

Champions on the field so they can be champions off the field.
