Down in the Ocean book(SPS) - A group of third graders at Holmes Park get to see their name in print after their book about ocean life was recently published.

Mrs. Warren’s students were tasked with researching something that lived in the ocean and then write about it and draw an illustration for their “Down in the Ocean” book.

“Each student has two pages in the book, one is the writing and the other is the illustration,” said Mrs. Warren. “We worked together on the cover, title page, and dedication page.”

The book is dedicated to the students’ families.

Mrs. Warren has done projects like this in years’ past but this is the first time she’s had a book published. And from the reaction of the students, it doesn’t sound like it will be the last.

“When the students saw their books for the first time, they were so excited! Their eyes just lit up! They wanted me to read it to them, then they spent a lot of time looking through each page and telling each other how good their illustrations were!”

Mrs. Warren requested a free publishing kit from Studenttreasures.com and about four weeks after she submitted the book, the published versions arrived in the mail.

She said the students worked really hard on their research and creating the book.

“I am so proud of my students,” she said. “They loved having their own thing from the ocean that they were responsible for writing about. They even looked up pictures so their illustrations would be as accurate as possible. Best of all, they got to see the final product of their hard work and feel that sense of accomplishment and pride!”
