Sapulpa boys soccer practice, Feb. 2019(SPS) - It’s going to be a long, but fun day for the boys of the Sapulpa soccer program.

They are hosting four schools in a 10-game round-robin day of scrimmages at the Westside Sports Complex that kicks off at 8 a.m. and doesn’t end until after 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23.

Admission is free to the public.

It’s the first year for the event that head coach Kip Shubert organized to include some of the top varsity teams in the state - teams the Chieftains won’t face during the regular season. He said this type of exhibition is important to help him as he puts the final touches on his program before the season begins on March 1.

“It is vital. It gives you a look at what you have and an opportunity to see what is working and what needs to be adjusted,” said coach Shubert said of the exhibition. “Clarifies a lot of ideas you have been working on since the school year began.”

The boys are coming off of an improved season last year. They finished the 2018 campaign in a four-way tie for second in district play with a 10-5 record. They missed out on the playoffs by just two goals.

“We had a great year last year, best in over a decade, and now we have to learn to translate that into consistent success, learn to how to carry ourselves as winners.”

The round-robin is part of that maturation process.

“I am looking for our guys to step up, engage, and compete,” he said. “We have new guys on defense so we will get to see who steps up to earn starting positions. They need to play. They have been restless and just need to get back in the fire.”

The boys will definitely get their chance to play and shake out the restlessness on Saturday. They kick off the event at 8 a.m. against Jenks. They follow up at 11:45 a.m. versus Booker T. Washington. The Chieftains then take on Mustang at 3:30 p.m. and close out the evening at 7:15 p.m. with Bartlesville.

The games will be two 25-minute halves. Schedule (home team is listed first):

8 a.m. - Sapulpa vs Jenks
9:15 a.m. - Bartlesville vs Booker T.
10:30 a.m. - Jenks vs Mustang
11:45 a.m. - Sapulpa vs Booker T.
