Sapulpa Chieftains Basketball(SPS) - Before the basketball season started, head coach Rickey Bruner placed the bar high for the boys' varsity squad.

“Our number one expectation is to make a state tournament run this season,” Bruner said in late November.

The team has rolled to a 15-3 record and No. 4 ranking and put themselves in a good position for a run in the postseason.

With four games remaining in the regular season, the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association released the Regional brackets on Thursday. The road looks good for the boys.

The Chieftains secured a regional at the Chieftain Center with games on Feb. 22 and 23. Sapulpa opens with Ponca City while Owasso and Bartlesville square off in the other game.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Chieftains are on their way to improving on last year’s record, which was one of the goals for head coach Darlene Calip.

“We want to win every game, win every tournament we play in but our biggest thing is improving each and every time we step on the court,” said Calip prior to the start of the season.

At 11-7 and ranked 18, the girls have shown the improvement coach Calip was looking for. They are assigned to the Shawnee Regional on Feb. 21.

The girls open up with Booker T. Washington, which will be the third time the two have played this season. BTW won the first matchup to open the season while Sapulpa claimed the second game, a 46-41 victory on Feb. 1. Shawnee takes on Enid in the other game in the Regional.
