15 schools competing in Sapulpa Wrestling Tournament

Sapulpa Wrestling Team(SPS) - Get ready for a loud and raucous Chieftain Center as it plays host to the Sapulpa Wrestling Tournament.

Fifteen schools will participate in the event on Jan. 11 and 12.

The Sapulpa Varsity wrestling team will compete and do their part to put a Whizzer on the field and bring home some wins.

To help the Chieftains perform their best, a boisterous crowd can put the wrestlers over the top when they start cheering.

"Especially late in the match when they get tired or in a position where they’re in on the guy and they’re trying to take him down on the mat," said Kyle Blevins, Sapulpa Wrestling Head Coach. "They really rally around, you know, just that noise and that vocalization."

Other schools include:

Bartlesville
Bixby
Broken Arrow
Collinsville
Commanche
Ft. Smith Southside (Arkansas)
Muskogee
Pawhuska
Perkins
Ponca City
Sallisaw
Sand Springs
Sperry
Union

The wrestling begins at 12 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday. Gate admission is $5.

By the way, a Whizzer, for the uninitiated, is a clinch hold used to control the opponent.

Let’s go, Chieftains!
