Basketball(SPS) - For many of you, two days after Christmas you will no doubt be ready to get out of the house and cheer on your Chieftains.

You’re in luck. The Sapulpa Chieftains Holiday Classic is the event for you.

Eight teams will compete in the girls' basketball tournament for three days at the Chieftain Center beginning Dec. 27.

It’s the fifth year of the Classic and Head Coach Darlene Calip said she wasn’t mapping out the path of least resistance to the championship game when determining who to invite.

“I look for teams with great tradition and teams that I anticipate to be competing for a state championship in March. We want the best. We want a competitive and challenging three-day tournament that will prepare us for the state playoffs,” said Calip. “Win or lose, we will definitely gain tremendous experience and each team will grow.”

This year’s teams include both varsity and junior varsity Sapulpa teams, OKC Classen School of Advanced Studies, Booker T. Washington, Greenwood (Arkansas), Edmond Santa Fe, Van Buren (Arkansas), and Muskogee.

Game 1 pits two-time defending champion Edmond Santa Fe against Van Buren at 2 p.m. That’s followed by Sapulpa Junior Varsity and Muskogee at 3:30 p.m. in Game 2. The third game is Booker T. Washington and Greenwood at 5 p.m. Capping off day one is the Sapulpa varsity squad versus Classen SAS in Game 4 at 6:30 p.m.

The complete three-day, 12-game bracket, with game times, can be viewed here.

The Classic promises to be a display of high-quality basketball.

“This is one of the premier showcases of high school girls basketball in the metro area over Christmas break,” said Sapulpa Public Schools Athletics Director Jason Parker. “Patrons will be treated to an early season look at some future state tournament teams, here on our very campus. This is an outstanding event for the district and community. We encourage everyone to come out and support these student-athletes.”

The championship game is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 29 at 2:30 p.m. The cost of admission is $5 per day.
