Students practicing a Jr. Botball challenge(SPS) - More than 20 fourth and fifth grade students were at Central Park Hall on the Tulsa Fairgrounds to display their skills in computer science on Wednesday.

The 22 students from Liberty, Holmes Park, and Freedom elementary schools participated in the Junior Botball Challenge Day where students showed their progress using autonomous robots.

Our students worked together in groups of three and four on the 12 challenges set up at the event.

“They have all day to just work. So they work on a program, they get it ready, they go and try it out and then come back and work some more,” said Kari Peterson, Gifted and Talented Coordinator for Sapulpa Public Schools.

They practiced in a pit area where they developed code for each challenge and put their robots through the program. Once they felt comfortable with their trial runs, the group would then head over to the test area.

“They have five minutes to successfully complete the challenge.”

Once they conquered the challenge each student in the group received a button before they headed back to the pit area to begin work on the next challenge.

“It’s really cool, they’re doing a great job,” said Mrs. Peterson. “It’s amazing the things they can do.”

Junior Botball is an interactive program developed to teach STEM fundamentals and help students of all levels achieve subject mastery through engaging hands-on robotics activities.
