Sapulpa coaches watch during JV Girls 5k race(SPS) - It was a hot and muggy weekend in two states for members of the Cross Country team.

Coach Debbie Williams took runners to Missouri Southern State University's Southern Stampede in Joplin, while others went to Sand Springs to compete in the Case Cross Country Invitational.

The 7th and 8th-grade runners had the weekend off.

Some of the top teams from at least four states competed at the Southern Stampede, the biggest race in terms of size for our runners this year. Nearly 400 runners entered the large school divisions, but only 300 finished.

Stormie Ramsey and Sydney Krehbiel raced well and were the 3rd and 4th Oklahoma finishers, respectively. Leona Crowl dropped at least a minute off her time as she continues to better her times from last year. Caiden Henderson continued his strong running and led our boys' team.

"I'm proud of how our varsity athletes ran tough in those conditions," said Williams.

Like Joplin, it was a hot morning in Sand Springs which made it a tough day to run, but that didn't stop our Chieftains from running hard.

In the 6th-grade division, the Chieftains had several medal winners. Kyle Haught finished 2nd overall, Traber Lusk and Rylan Coleman finished right after Kyle in 3rd and 4th place, respectively.

Other medal winners for Sapulpa included Clayton McCullough, Zaden Richards, James Painter. Bailey Webb finished in the top 10 in the 6th-grade girls and received a medal.

"I continue to be impressed with the 6th graders and how far they’ve come so far this season. I’m proud of the new runners to our program. We definitely have room to improve, and no doubt they will improve because of how hard they work every day." said Coach Jeremy Lusk.

Jordan Williams led the Varsity group that ran at Sand Springs this weekend with a top 25 finish. The varsity boys finished in 5th place.

Up next is the Holland Hall Cross Country Invitational on Sept 22. The meet begins at 8:30 a.m. with the 1,600 meters for the boys and concludes with the 11:40 a.m. JV Girls 5k.

"It will be a fast course for our young runners but a nice, hilly challenge for our high school athletes," said Coach Williams.
