Sapulpa Indian Ed hands out 360 bags of school supplies

(SPS) - The Sapulpa Indian Education office at Woodlawn Annex was open for business Monday and Tuesday of this week.

SIE held its annual School Supply Pickup for Native American students who are enrolled in the Johnson O’Malley program.

The school district receives money from the federal government for JOM to help participating students meet academic, social, and cultural needs as well as helping them plan for college and career.

Tables were packed with grocery bags filled with supplies for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade.

During the two-day event, more than 360 bags of supplies were given to students.

The Pickup is just one of the many benefits for students who are enrolled in JOM. In addition to free school supplies, enrollees also receive help with ACT testing, Chromebook insurance, and other services.

Sapulpa Indian Education Director Kayla Chupco said the services offered to students are an important resource for our students.

"We also offer opportunities throughout the year for families to connect culturally such as the annual stomp dance and stickball days," said Chupco. "We are always looking for area tribal citizens to assist in the enrichment of our students. Please reach out as we set up our students for success now and into the future."
