Cross Country season begins with twice-a-day practices

Runners participate in cross country practice at Westside Sports Complex(SPS) - We do more by 9 a.m. than most people do all day. Remember that Army slogan?

Well, that could apply to the members of the Sapulpa Chieftains Cross Country team. Only back it up by an hour.

By the time 8 a.m. rolls around, our runners are putting the finishing touches on their first practice session of the day.

The team meets every day at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. except for Wednesday and Friday evenings.

Practice for the 2018 season began Monday and it can be tough on the student-athletes these first few days.

“By the time I see them tonight they’re going to be pretty tired and then when they come back tomorrow they’re going to be sore,” said Cross Country Head Coach Debbie Williams.

With a roster of 116 Junior High and High School runners, Williams and her staff are excited with what they’re seeing after just the second day of practice, especially from those returning from last season.

“We have Stormie Ramsey coming back this year and as a freshman last year she was runner-up at conference. She was an All-Stater as a freshman,” Williams said. “Sydney Krehbeil is back. She was top 20 at state as a freshman as well.”

“For the boys, we have Jordan Williams coming back as one of our top varsity returners, and Cayden Williams. And then Mason Quinton and Evan Quinton, Edgar Borjas are all stepping up to the freshman level and already have varsity potential which is huge.”

The team’s first meet is the Sapulpa Invitational on Sept. 1 at the Westside Sports Complex.
