Students at Jr/Sr High required to wear ID badges

(SPS) - New this year at both Sapulpa Junior High and Sapulpa High School, students will be required to wear an ID badge during the school day.

Each student will be issued the ID badge and a lanyard free of charge at the beginning of the school year. It must be worn around the neck at all times with the exception of extracurricular and physical activities.

The badges will be color-coded based on grade level and include a photo ID of the student.

The ID cannot be covered with stickers, pins, or any other object, nor altered in any way.

The purpose of the badge is to allow staff the ability to immediately identify students in an effort to build on the safety and security measures already in place at the schools.

“We started discussing the use of ID badges late last year,” said High School Principal Seth Shibley. “The main goal of the badge is to provide another level of security for students at school, but also to explore ways the badge may be used for lunch purchases, athletic events, checking out books, that sort of thing. The badge won’t have that functionality in place at the beginning of the school year, but it is possible we will have that capability at some point soon.”

Replacement badges will be available for those that are lost, stolen, or unusable. The student will be responsible for the replacement cost of $5. Replacement lanyards will also be available for $5.

Possession of another student’s ID is strictly prohibited.

FOX 23 spoke with Principal Shibley and aired this story about the ID badges during their newscast Thursday evening.
