Chieftains football at 3-day camp in Kansas

(SPS) - It was a sight you don't see very often on a summer day early in the morning: high school student-athletes out of bed and at school waiting for the bus.

That was the case Thursday morning as our football team prepared to head off to Kansas for camp.

Approximately 70 players clutching pillows and snacks boarded the bus, but only after packing away their football gear and placing it in a trailer for the nearly two and a half hour drive.

The team will be at camp at Pittsburg State University until Saturday.

"Football programs are built in the offseason," said Head Coach Rob Borgstadt during spring practice. "When you come through in August you're ready to go."

The team will practice twice on Thursday, three times on Friday, and once on Saturday morning before they come home.
